Ready in just 30 minutes, this dish is ideal for a quick dinner that feels extra special. Serve with steamed rice or noodles and garnish with fresh chillies and spring onions for that perfect finishing touch!

Ingredients

Scale

For the Beef:

  • 500g beef steak (sirloin or flank), thinly sliced

  • 3 tbsp cornflour (cornstarch)

  • 1 egg, beaten

  • Vegetable oil, for frying

  • 1 red chilli, thinly sliced

  • 2 spring onions, chopped (for garnish)

  • 1 tbsp garlic, minced

  • 1 tbsp ginger, minced

For the Sauce:

  • 2 tbsp soy sauce

  • 1 tbsp rice vinegar

  • 2 tbsp hoisin sauce

  • 1 tbsp honey (or brown sugar)

  • 1 tsp sesame oil

  • 60ml (1/4 cup) water

  • 1 tsp chilli flakes (adjust to your spice preference)

  • 1 tsp cornflour (for thickening)

Instructions

  1. Prepare the Beef:
In a bowl, coat the thinly sliced beef with cornflour and beaten egg. Mix until all the strips are evenly coated.

  2. Fry the Beef:
Heat vegetable oil in a deep pan or wok over medium-high heat. Fry the beef in small batches for 3-4 minutes until crispy and golden. Drain on paper towels.

  3. Cook the Aromatics:
Remove excess oil from the pan, leaving about 1 tbsp. Add the minced garlic and ginger, sauté for 1 minute until fragrant.

  4. Make the Sauce:
In a bowl, whisk together soy sauce, rice vinegar, hoisin sauce, honey, sesame oil, water, and chilli flakes. In a separate bowl, dissolve 1 tsp cornflour in a splash of water.

  5. Simmer the Sauce:
Pour the sauce into the pan with the aromatics and bring to a simmer. Add the cornflour mixture, stirring continuously until the sauce thickens slightly.

  6. Toss the Beef:
Add the crispy beef back into the pan, tossing to coat in the sauce.

  7. Garnish & Serve:
Top with sliced red chilli and chopped spring onions. Serve immediately with steamed rice or noodles.

Notes

  • Adjust the Spice: Add extra chilli flakes if you like it hot or reduce for a milder version.

  • Double the Sauce: If you love extra sauce, simply double the sauce ingredients.

  • Fry in Batches: Overcrowding the pan can make the beef less crispy. Patience is key!

  • Serving Ideas: Pairs perfectly with steamed jasmine rice or tossed with your favorite noodles.
