-
500g beef steak (sirloin or flank), thinly sliced
-
3 tbsp cornflour (cornstarch)
-
1 egg, beaten
-
Vegetable oil, for frying
-
1 red chilli, thinly sliced
-
2 spring onions, chopped (for garnish)
-
1 tbsp garlic, minced
-
1 tbsp ginger, minced
For the Sauce:
-
2 tbsp soy sauce
-
1 tbsp rice vinegar
-
2 tbsp hoisin sauce
-
1 tbsp honey (or brown sugar)
-
1 tsp sesame oil
-
60ml (1/4 cup) water
-
1 tsp chilli flakes (adjust to your spice preference)
-
1 tsp cornflour (for thickening)
Instructions
-
Prepare the Beef:
In a bowl, coat the thinly sliced beef with cornflour and beaten egg. Mix until all the strips are evenly coated. -
Fry the Beef:
Heat vegetable oil in a deep pan or wok over medium-high heat. Fry the beef in small batches for 3-4 minutes until crispy and golden. Drain on paper towels. -
Cook the Aromatics:
Remove excess oil from the pan, leaving about 1 tbsp. Add the minced garlic and ginger, sauté for 1 minute until fragrant. -
Make the Sauce:
In a bowl, whisk together soy sauce, rice vinegar, hoisin sauce, honey, sesame oil, water, and chilli flakes. In a separate bowl, dissolve 1 tsp cornflour in a splash of water. -
Simmer the Sauce:
Pour the sauce into the pan with the aromatics and bring to a simmer. Add the cornflour mixture, stirring continuously until the sauce thickens slightly. -
Toss the Beef:
Add the crispy beef back into the pan, tossing to coat in the sauce. -
Garnish & Serve:
Top with sliced red chilli and chopped spring onions. Serve immediately with steamed rice or noodles.
Notes
-
Adjust the Spice: Add extra chilli flakes if you like it hot or reduce for a milder version.
-
Double the Sauce: If you love extra sauce, simply double the sauce ingredients.
-
Fry in Batches: Overcrowding the pan can make the beef less crispy. Patience is key!
-
Serving Ideas: Pairs perfectly with steamed jasmine rice or tossed with your favorite noodles.
