Description

These traditional British flapjacks are a sweet, chewy oat bar made with simple ingredients like rolled oats, golden syrup, butter, and brown sugar. Baked until golden and firm, they’re easy to prepare and make the perfect afternoon snack or lunchbox addition. This no-fuss recipe takes just 35 minutes from start to finish and is easily customizable with fruit, nuts, or chocolate.

Ingredients

Scale
  • 150g unsalted butter

  • 4 tbsp golden syrup

  • 100g brown sugar

  • 50g plain flour

  • 1 tsp baking powder

  • 300g rolled oats

  • Pinch of salt (optional)

Instructions

  • Preheat oven: Preheat to 180°C (160°C fan) / 350°F. Grease and line a 20cm (8-inch) square baking tin with parchment paper.

  • Melt wet ingredients: In a large saucepan, melt the butter, golden syrup, and brown sugar over low heat, stirring until smooth.

  • Combine with dry ingredients: Remove from heat. Stir in rolled oats, flour, baking powder, and an optional pinch of salt until well combined.

  • Transfer to tin: Pour mixture into the prepared tin. Press down evenly with the back of a spoon to level it out.

  • Bake: Bake for 20–25 minutes or until golden brown and slightly firm.

  • Cool and cut: Let cool in the tin for 10 minutes, then cut into squares while still warm. Cool completely before serving.

Notes

  • Storage: Store in an airtight container at room temperature for up to 5 days, or freeze for longer storage.

  • Customizations: Add dried fruit, chopped nuts, seeds, or chocolate chips to vary the flavor.

  • Texture tip: For softer flapjacks, bake for 20 minutes; for a firmer texture, go closer to 25 minutes.

  • No golden syrup? Honey or maple syrup can be used, but the taste and texture will differ.

  • Vegan-friendly version: Use dairy-free butter and ensure all ingredients are plant-based.
