Ingredients
Scale
- 2 medium sweet potatoes (about 1 pound)
- 1 tablespoon olive oil
- 2 teaspoons kosher salt, divided
- 1/4 teaspoon garlic powder
- 1/4 teaspoon paprika
- 1/4 teaspoon black pepper
Instructions
- Peel the sweet potatoes and cut off the ends. Slice the potatoes into 1/4- inch fries. It’s easiest to cut the potato in half first so you have a flat surface to lay on your cutting board.
- Fill a large bowl with cold water and add 1 1/2 teaspoons of kosher salt. Stir to dissolve.
- Add the sliced potatoes to the bowl of water and let them soak for 30 minutes.
- Remove the soaked potatoes and pat them dry with a clean dish towel.
- Put the potatoes into a clean bowl and pour the olive oil over the potatoes. Stir around to coat.
- Combine the remaining salt, garlic powder, paprika, and black pepper in a small bowl. Sprinkle the seasoning over the potatoes. Stir again until they are evenly coated.
- Preheat the air fryer to 380°F.
- Once the air fryer is hot, add the fries in a single layer in the air fryer basket. Make sure they don’t overlap. You may need to cook in batches.
- Air fry for 13 minutes, turning once halfway through. The fries should be a little bit browned and crispy when they are done.
- Serve immediately with your favorite dipping sauce.
Notes
- Soaking Tip: Soak sliced sweet potatoes in cold water for 30–60 minutes to remove starch and improve crispiness.
- Cornstarch Option: Toss fries with 1 tsp cornstarch or arrowroot powder before air frying for a crispier finish.
- Oil Matters: Use a high smoke point oil like avocado or refined olive oil to prevent smoking and ensure even browning.
- Batch Cooking: Don’t overcrowd the air fryer basket. Cook in batches for best results.
- Storage: Store leftovers in an airtight container in the fridge for up to 3 days. Reheat in the air fryer at 350°F for 3–5 minutes to restore crispiness.
- Seasoning Ideas: Try smoked paprika, garlic powder, cinnamon sugar, or Cajun seasoning for variety.
- Serving Suggestions: Delicious with garlic aioli, spicy mayo, ketchup, or your favorite dipping sauce.
